House Organisation Hacks For Sellers

So you want to sell your house but the inside looks more like an avalanche rather than an inviting, decadent dream for potential buyers? For many, organising their homes can be a truly daunting task. When you look around, it may feel overwhelming and as though you’re forever stuck in a "to-do" list reality, unsure of where exactly to start. Sound like a familiar dilemma? Fret not! We have scoured the internet for some of the best organising hacks out there to help you conquer your clutter.

Zone Your Pantry

Organising your pantry is no easy feat, we hear you!  You need serious grit and a keen eye to sort through all of the perishable goods, cereal boxes, kids snacks and miscellaneous baking ingredients that have piled up! No matter the size or layout of your pantry, take your time to develop a system that will actually work in your space. The ‘zoning’ method is an excellent way to organise and maintain a clean and functional pantry, there’s no wonder it went viral on Tik Tok!  Once you roll up your sleeves, believe us, you’ll be wanting to host weekly tea parties in your gorgeous new space! More importantly, you’ll be able to see what food you actually have, what you need to restock, and where the groceries belong!

First, pinpoint food and cooking categories that suit your lifestyle (such as weeknight dinners, kids lunches, and baking). Next, designate an area for each, with the most often-used zones in easy reach. Finally, the most exciting component: invest in some swanky clear containers and label each zone to keep the sections in order. Here are some zoning categories to inspire your inner Stepford wife (or husband!)

Zone 1: Non-essentials. Store lesser-eaten foods in remoter areas such as top shelves or back corners
Zone 2: Dry Ingredients
Zone 3: Canned Goods
Zone 4: Quick Meals
Zone 5: Liquids
Zone 6: Herbs and Spices
Zone 7: Special Foods

The Basket Life

Jazzing up any area with some trendy baskets for quick and effective decluttering is a gift sent from God for any household. Whether those baskets are the home for random lego pieces, an assortment of batteries, or extra cables, it doesn’t matter! You can rest assured nosy in-laws, dinner party guests or hungry buyers perusing the contents of your home won’t know the difference and space will remain deceivingly tidy- let’s be honest, that's all that counts! For everything else, create a dedicated clutter space! Much like the random third drawer in everyone’s kitchen, allocate a space such as an accessories cabinet to store pieces like picnic gear, candlesticks, vases, and decor items you display only sometimes!

This way, when you want to change up your decor or entertain, you know exactly where to retrieve these items! And more conveniently, when it’s time to store them again, you know exactly where they live: your organised ‘clutter cabinet’.

Pare Down Your Clothing & Store Seasonally

If you’re like most of us, you spend half the morning on a mission to find a matching sock, torturing your family members with never-ending "have you seen" questions and trapping yourself in the perpetual "lost and found" limbo. Sound like your house?

Do yourself a favor and move toward a minimalist life! Start with the biggest problem, your wardrobe! You will find once you start decluttering your clothing, you no longer need all those scarves, jumpers, jeans, and gorgeous but completely impractical shoes bought from impulse! #guilty. You’ll save space in your closet, and have less clothing to maintain!

Make a pact with yourself to rotate your items seasonally so the clothing you wear most often is right up front. Switching out your clothes each season will give you a chance to really examine each piece to see if it's time to make a trip to Vinnie’s.

Get Moving With The Box Method

If you’re moving house, start the decluttering process early! It makes zero sense to pack and move the unwanted or unused items you’re going to turf anyway. Whilst decluttering can be fast after a double-shot espresso, some items like keepsakes and old clothing can take time to let go of.

If you know you will be moving eventually, decluttering makes staging your home and packing all the more easier! Think of it as role play: If you pretend you're moving, as you declutter, ask yourself if you would pack an item and move it to your brand new home?

If you’re a natural-born hoarder, try the “box method”. Take three boxes and divide them into three categories: put away, donate/sell, and storage. Go through your items one by one and bravely place them in their designated box. It makes letting go that little bit easier and the decision-making process a little quicker!
